Apple confirmed on Wednesday that it had acquired a startup focused on making lenses for augmented reality glasses, and that it had the ambition to make a wearable device that would superimpose digital information into the real world.
Apple confirmed the acquisition of Longmont, Colorado.
Based on Akonia holographic photos.
"Apple buys smaller companies from time to time and we don't usually discuss our purpose or plan," the IPhone manufacturer said in a statement . ".
Akonia could not be reached immediately for comment.
According to the company's website, the company was founded in 2012 and was created by a group of holographic scientists, initially focusing on holographic data storage, and will then work towards making displays for augmented reality glasses.
In augmented reality, digital information is covered in the real world, just like the popular game Pokemon Go.
The phone uses their camera system on the screen of the phone to do this, but major tech companies are racing to make glasses that can display digital information on the head of the transparent mirror.
Akonia says its display technology allows "thin, transparent smart glass lenses to display vibrant full
Color, wide field-of-view images.
According to the company's website, the company has more than 200 patents related to holographic systems and materials.
Akonia also said it had raised $11.
Seed funding for 2012 was € 6 million and additional funding is being sought.
It is not clear whether the funds will be cashed or who the company's investors are.
The purchase price and date cannot be known, although a senior executive in the augmented reality industry said the Akonia team has become "very quiet" in the past six months, meaning the deal could happen in the first half of 2018.
Apple has a history of buying small companies whose technology has emerged in many years.
In 2013, Apple acquired a small Israeli company called PrimeSense, which produced three
Size sensor.
The iPhone X launched last year uses similar sensors to drive facial recognition.
According to Bloomberg last year, Apple is developing an augmented reality glasses that can ship as early as 2020.
Apple declined to comment on its plans or products.
But the company launched augmented reality applications for its iphone and ipad last year, with CEO Tim Cook calling augmented reality a "significant and far-reaching" technology development.
Speaking of augmented reality during a conference call with investors last year, Cook said: "This is one of the big things we review and marvel . ".
The acquisition of Akonia is the first clear sign of how Apple can cope with one of the toughest challenges in augmented reality hardware: the production of crystal-clear optical displays, thin enough to fit into glasses similar to everyday frames, the image is bright enough for outdoor use and is suitable for mass manufacturing at a relatively low price.

Both the HoloLens and the Magic Leap One of startup Magic Leap use dark lenses for indoor use.
Both technologies were also prepared for software developers testing the technology, costing thousands of dollars.
